Es war die Idee von WIKING-Gründer Fritz Peltzer in den Sechzigerjahren, dem Trend der Formel-1- und Formel-2-Rennserien zu folgen. Der Cooper T45, der 1958 von der Cooper Car Company in einer Formel-2- und einer Formel-1-Version gebaut wurde, sollte als Vorbild Geschichte schreiben. Bei WIKING fand er hingegen viele junge Liebhaber. Cooper baute einst 24 Formel-2-Wagen vom Typ T45. Zugleich kamen im eigenen Werksteam die kompakten Rennwagen zum Einsatz. 1959 setzte sogar Jack Brabham ein T45-Duo in der Formel 2 ein. Rob Walker und die British Racing Partnership wollten ebenfalls in der Rennserie Gas geben und rüsteten ihre T45 mit Borgward-Motoren mit Bosch-Einspritzung aus. Stirling Moss hatte damals mit dem Rob-Walker-T45 sogar die französische Formel-2-Meisterschaft gewonnen.
